Marlins & Diving in Baja Trip Report 2024

Magdalena Bay Striped Marlins trip Report

The magic of Magdalena Bay and Cabo Pulmo does not disappoint

Nov 3 – 11 2024 Magdalena Bay & Cabo Pulmo Marine Park Baja Mexico

Striped marlin hunting sardines

Magdalena Bay was a bit cold this year, but the sardines were numerous and we had many great drops onto active bait balls. This year there were not the golden doratos like last year, but this ensured that we had the striped marlins on the bait balls. We were able to capture some great predation action with shots of the marlin scewering fish with its bill and making attack runs at the schools of fish.

Magdalena Bay is always magic and any marine species is possible: we had encounters with killer whales – orcas, dolphin, schools of rays. A groups just after us encountered a moa moa.

Before the guests arrived for our transfer to Magdalena Bay, I stayed in the Gallery District in Cabo San Lucas for the Day of the Dead festival. The costumes and colorful displays are wonderful street photography subjects.

Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve is well managed and we enjoy the variety of diving including the mega schools of jacks and the dives with the bull sharks.
